New publication presented at CloudNet 2024

Christian Esteve Rothenberg, SMARTNESS PI and Director, Dr. Fabricio Rodríguez Cesen, and M. Sc. student Arthur J Simas (UNICAMP) have a new publication accepted as a short paper in the IEEE International Conference on Cloud Networking (IEEE CloudNet), to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in November 2024.

In the paper named “eZtunnel: Leveraging eBPF to Transparently Offload Service Mesh Data Plane Networking”, the authors discuss performance bottlenecks arising from service meshes (such as Istio) and propose eZtunnel to address some of the identified challenges. Leveraging extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) to transparently offload networking traffic in a Kubernetes node running some service mesh flavor, the elongated network path is bypassed, optimizing resource utilization and enhancing application performance. Experiments show that eZtunnel can reduce median latency over 20% and jitter to almost 10%.

The ERC SMARTNESS team congratulates the authors of the work on the success achieved and encourages them to continue their research. Stay tuned for more updates soon!
