SMARTNESS celebrates three new MSc defenses

The SMARTNESS Engineering Research Center is excited to announce three new MSc defenses:

1. eZtunnel: Accelerating Cloud-Native Communications with eBPF

Arthur Simas (FEEC/UNICAMP) | 9 AM, January 16

Arthur’s work tackles performance bottlenecks in cloud-native applications, where complex environments like Kubernetes and Istio introduce latency and CPU overload. His solution, eZtunnel, leverages eBPF technology to optimize communication between microservices, significantly reducing packet processing overhead. Results demonstrate improvements in flow completion time, latency, and throughput, paving the way for more efficient cloud infrastructures.

2. Bridging TSN and 5G for Smarter Industries

Sergio Rossi (FEEC/UNICAMP) | 2 PM, January 16

Sergio’s project explores the integration of Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) with 5G to enable ultra-reliable, low-latency communication for smart industries. By mapping quality-of-service (QoS) parameters and simulating synchronization mechanisms, his work aims to create hybrid networks that combine TSN’s deterministic Ethernet capabilities with 5G’s flexibility.

3. Assuring Devices Conformity by Using Programmable Networks

Rodrigo Pierini (FEEC/UNICAMP) | 2 PM, January 17

Rodrigo addresses security challenges in programmable data planes, focusing on scalable compliance verification for data centers. His innovative approach uses programmable switches to offload remote attestation tasks, drastically speeding up the verification process. By reducing the time window for potential attacks, this work strengthens trust in critical network infrastructure.
These defenses exemplify the high quality. impactful research nurtured by SMARTNESS. Stay tuned for more updates on cutting edge research from our research center.
