LEMAC and SMARTNESS Visit INPE to Explore Electromagnetic Material Characterization

On April 16, 2025, Eduardo Sartori — SMARTNESS Innovation and Technology Transfer Manager — conducted a technical visit to the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in São José dos Campos, Brazil, accompanied by researchers from LEMAC. The goal was to learn more about INPE’s electromagnetic parameter measurement system for materials, which evaluates permittivity and permeability in the microwave frequency range.

During the visit, measurements were carried out on materials used in ongoing metasurface research led by Prof. Hugo Figueroa (CO-PI/SMARTNESS). The experience played a strategic role in supporting the planning of a similar system to be developed at the Laboratory for Testing Materials and Components (LEMAC), part of SMARTNESS. The future infrastructure will enable measurements at frequencies up to 500GHz, enhancing research capabilities in high-frequency materials for next-generation networks and smart devices.

In addition to Eduardo Sartori, the visit included LEMAC researchers Rafaela Cardoso, Silvio Domingos, and Cynthia Junqueira.
