Prof. Christian Rothenberg Presents SMARTNESS Research on AI and Networking at LACNIC 43

On May 9, 2025, Prof. Christian Rothenberg, researcher at FEEC/UNICAMP and Principal Investigator of the SMARTNESS Engineering Research Center, participated in a plenary session at LACNIC 43, where he delivered the talk “Fundamentos, investigación y casos reales de la IA/ML en la gestión de redes.” His presentation addressed the foundational concepts of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). It demonstrated how these technologies are applied to network automation, Quality of Experience (QoE) prediction, and anomaly detection in modern communication infrastructures.

Rothenberg shared real-world research developed within the SMARTNESS Center, including using machine learning models to predict video streaming quality on YouTube over 4G/5G networks.

He also presented recent research highlights in collaboration with the telecom industry at FEEC/UNICAMP, exploring the concept of Network Digital Twins to localize soft failures in optical systems. He concluded the session by outlining actionable steps for integrating AI/ML into operational environments, emphasizing the importance of data quality, collaboration with research groups, and identification of network challenges as entry points for innovation.

His talk was part of the panel “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Networks: Applications and Perspectives“, which also featured Carlos Martínez (CTO of LACNIC) and Ariel Weher (President of LACNOG). The session focused on the growing relevance of AI/ML for the evolution of network infrastructures in Latin America, exploring both current implementations and future opportunities.

LACNIC 43 was held from May 5 to 9, 2025, at the Anhembi District Convention Center in São Paulo, Brazil. Organized by LACNIC in partnership with ABRINT, the event, one of the region’s most important Internet events, brought together technical experts, policymakers, and industry professionals for a week of tutorials, policy forums, and strategic discussions. The collaboration with ABRINT also allowed participants of LACNIC 43 to access the largest ISP-focused event in Brazil, expanding networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities.
