The SMARTNESS Research Center is proud to highlight an important milestone in its international collaboration and talent development efforts. From October to December 2026, one of our PhD researchers, Alcides Tomás, will undertake a three-month research exchange at Southeast University (SEU) in Nanjing, China, hosted at the prestigious School of Information Science and Engineering.
Advancing Multimodal AI for Wireless Communications
During the exchange, the research will focus on beam prediction for next-generation wireless communication systems. As networks evolve toward high-frequency 5G-Advanced and 6G architectures, precise beamforming and prediction become critical for maintaining reliable, ultra-low-latency links. The project leverages cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence and multimodal data integration, fusing:
- Camera images for spatial and environmental context
- LiDAR sensing for precise 3D physical environment mapping
- Wireless channel data for real-time propagation dynamics
By combining computer vision, physical environment sensing, and radio frequency metrics, the research aims to create intelligent, predictive beamforming models that significantly improve communication efficiency in complex urban and industrial scenarios.
Strengthening International Telecommunications Ecosystems
This research visit reinforces SMARTNESS’s strategic mission: to build global academic bridges and transform high-level scientific research into impactful technological solutions for the networks of the future.
The exchange is made possible through the collaborative support of key institutional partnerships, involving the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), the Brazilian Ministry of Defense and CNPq, and other prominent institutions such as the ELDORADO Research Institute, the National Institute of Telecommunications (Inatel), and Southeast University.
This international journey represents not only an opportunity for academic and scientific growth but also a vital connection between Brazilian telecommunications research and world-leading international research centers in Asia.
