We are seeking candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship position for 24 months to work at SMARTNESS, an Engineering Research Center (ERC) formed by several universities and funded by Ericsson/FAPESP. The center aims to conduct cutting-edge research on computer networks and digital application services and, specifically for the position, we are focusing on immersive communications. Immersive communication is a strategic research area for next-generation media systems and 6G networks, demanding ultra-high bitrates, ultra-low end-to-end latency, and scalable solutions across heterogeneous devices and network conditions. Emerging immersive media representations (e.g. point clouds, light fields, meshes, and Gaussian splats) enable high-fidelity integration of physical and virtual environments, while posing significant challenges in terms of data volume, real-time processing, and transmission efficiency. Therefore, efficient compression of immersive media is essential! While recent deep learning–based approaches have shown promising gains beyond traditional rule-based coding methods, international standardization bodies such as MPEG and JPEG are actively advancing new coding standards. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct collaborative research, implement and evaluate novel video coding algorithms, contribute to high-impact scientific publications, write standardization contributions, submit patent applications and actively engage in standardization activities.
To succeed in this position, the candidate is expected to have PhD in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or related fields; Experience in video coding, signal processing and neural networks applied to video coding and processing; Experience with immersive media representation, especially 3D Gaussian Splats; a proven track record of publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, along with experience presenting research at standardization meetings, academic conferences, and relevant industry events.
Monthly stipend: The selected candidate will receive a monthly FAPESP Postdoctoral Scholarship in the amount of R$ 12.570,00 per month ($ 2.430 / € 2.060) and a technical reserve equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the scholarship for contingency funds directly related to the research activity.
How to Apply:
The opportunity is open to both Brazilian and international candidates holding a PhD, earned in Brazil or abroad. Interested candidates should fill out the online form (here), providing motivation letter, detailed curriculum vitae (with articles identified by DOI) and copy of the PhD certificate.
Only shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview with the supervisor to evaluate the alignment between the candidate’s expertise and the project’s research objectives.
