SMARTNESS welcomed, on March 16, a delegation from FIIS-UNI (Facultad de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas at Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería – Peru), reinforcing its commitment to internationalization and to strengthening strategic partnerships in research, innovation, and talent development.

A delegation from Ericsson, visiting from Sweden, met this Wednesday (11) with researchers at SMARTNESS for a strategic agenda focused on evaluating third-year results and expanding collaboration in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The delegation included Björn Johannisson, Aneta Vulgarakis, and Mikael Prytz, along with representatives from Ericsson Brazil.

The SMARTNESS held a special Work Packages (WPs) meeting on Thursday (26) at the Unicamp campus in Campinas, São Paulo, with the participation of researchers from Ericsson. The meeting focused on technical discussions related to the research activities of NW2 – Internet of Robotic Things for Smart Enterprise Environments and NW3 – Distributed Perception in the TROCA Environment, reinforcing the articulation between academia and industry in the development of innovative solutions in robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced connectivity.

On February, researchers from SMARTNESS visited Ericsson’s 5G Open Innovation Center in Indaiatuba, São Paulo (Brazil) for a technology immersion with a clear goal: turning 5G connectivity into real-world impact for society. The visit strengthened the bridge between applied research and industry challenges, opening new avenues for the co-creation of proofs of concept (PoCs) and experiments with strong scaling potential.

Professor Dr. Christian Rothenberg, Director and Principal Investigator (PI) of SMARTNESS, participated in the 2nd xGMobile International Workshop, held on November 25, 26, and 27, 2025, at the National Institute of Telecommunications (Inatel), in Santa Rita do Sapucaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The inauguration of the SMARTNESS Studio 5G, held at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), received extensive national media coverage, underscoring the relevance of the new research infrastructure for advancing studies in 5G, 6G, edge computing, and next-generation mobile networks.

A delegation from the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems (IMM) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), led by Dr. Walter Fuscaldo, visited SMARTNESS on November 24 and 25 as part of the CNR–CNPq Bilateral Project 2025-2026. The initiative strengthens ongoing research and development collaborations between FEEC/Unicamp and IMM, with a focus on sub-THz antenna technologies.

The SMARTNESS 2030 Engineering Research Center, supported by FAPESP and Ericsson, inaugurated on Wednesday (3) the SMARTNESS Studio 5G (SS5G), a space dedicated to the experimentation, demonstration, and prototyping of advanced connectivity technologies.

SMARTNESS congratulates Prof. Fernando J. Von Zuben and researcher Heictor Costa, members of the Center, for receiving the Best Paper Award at the Brazilian Congress on Computational Intelligence (CBIC 2025). The awarded paper, titled “Hybrid Offline–Online UAV Optimal Path Planning and Outburst Dynamic Autonomous Behavior”, was recognized by the CBIC committee for its scientific relevance and practical impact in the fields of computational intelligence and autonomous robotics.

Between October 27 and 30, 2025, Flávio Geraldo Coelho Rocha (UFG), researcher at SMARTNESS, carried out a series of technical visits and scientific activities in Europe, with stops in Italy and Hungary. These initiatives reinforce the Center’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and advancing research on the evolution of 5G and 6G networks.
