Professor Dr. Christian Rothenberg Presents 5G and 6G Research at the 2nd xGMobile International Workshop

Professor Dr. Christian Rothenberg, Director and Principal Investigator (PI) of SMARTNESS, participated in the 2nd xGMobile International Workshop, held on November 25, 26, and 27, 2025, at the National Institute of Telecommunications (Inatel), in Santa Rita do Sapucaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

During the workshop, Professor Rothenberg presented and discussed research results related to open 6G experimentation, focusing on the development of flexible, programmable, and high-fidelity test platforms for the evaluation of emerging protocols and yet-to-be-defined network architectures.

His work addressed key challenges in 6G research, including the need for adaptable experimental environments capable of supporting new protocol headers, AI-native network functions, real-time control mechanisms, and stringent requirements in terms of latency, jitter, and reliability.

Among the highlights of the presented work are open-source tools developed within the SMARTNESS framework that combine realistic network emulation, high-throughput traffic generation, and support for customized protocols. These tools enable early validation of solutions for advanced applications such as industrial networks, autonomous systems, holographic communications, and immersive reality, while also helping to lower cost and access barriers and supporting human resource training and scientific reproducibility in advanced networking research.

About the Event

The 2nd xGMobile International Workshop was a technical and scientific event that brought together national and international experts to discuss research and innovation in fifth-generation (5G) and sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks.

Organized by the EMBRAPII Inatel Competence Center in 5G and 6G Networks (xGMobile), the workshop aimed to promote knowledge exchange, strengthen strategic partnerships, and disseminate recent advances in mobile telecommunications.
