With the deployment of 5G and the 6G vision being developed, the main challenges for SMARTNESS are how to design and operate cloud computing infrastructures and networks with adequate capabilities to leverage the next generation of Internet services and applications. The scope of end-to-end services at the Internet scale is exceptionally broad and requires contributions across multiple disciplines along with large investments in capital and human resources.
SMARTNESS aims to explore well-planned opportunities through an appropriate methodology based on the confluence of Research Strands (RS) designed to successfully impact world-class research and innovation through Scientific and Technological Advancements (STA) to address challenging use cases in Internet scenarios for industry and society with a vision on the horizon for the year 2030.
Between October 27 and 30, 2025, Flávio Geraldo Coelho Rocha (UFG), researcher at SMARTNESS, carried out a series of technical visits and scientific activities in Europe, with stops in Italy and Hungary. These initiatives reinforce the Center’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and advancing research on the evolution of 5G and 6G networks.
At the end of October, Tariqul Islam, PhD student and member of SMARTNESS, visited Barcelona, Spain, to present a co-authored poster at the 27th International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems (MSWiM 2025).
SMARTNESS had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Antoni Ivanov and Dr. Atanas Vlahov from the Technical University of Sofia (TU-Sofia, Bulgaria) during their visit to Brazil on October 27th, 2025, as part of ongoing collaborations with Brazilian universities.
At LACNIC 43 in São Paulo, Christian Rothenberg (FEEC/UNICAMP) presented on AI/ML in network management. His talk covered fundamentals, automation, QoE optimization, and issue detection. Real-world cases included improving YouTube QoE on 4G/5G and detecting optical network failures. He concluded with practical tips for applying these technologies in real operations.
