Participation at SBSeg 2024, São José dos Campos, Brazil

The “Simpósio Brasileiro em Segurança da Informação e de Sistemas Computacionais” (SBSeg), a scientific event organized annually by the “Sociedade Brasileira de Computação” (SBC) under the responsibility of the “Comissão Especial em Segurança da Informação e de Sistemas Computacionais” (CESeg) of the SBC, was held in the city of São José dos Campos from September 16 to 19, 2024. The SBSeg represents the leading forum in the country for disseminating research results, debates, and the exchange of ideas and relevant activities related to information and computer systems security, integrating the Brazilian community of researchers and professionals working in this area. SMARTNESS researchers were present at the event, bringing important highlights:

Ph.D. student Caio Teixeira, from FEEC/UNICAMP, under the supervision of Professor Marco A. A. Henriques (Research Group on Applied Security – ReGrAS), presented the paper “Desafios e oportunidades de pesquisa na adoção de criptografia pós-quântica em redes veiculares”. This paper, which won the Best Short Article award in the event’s cryptography track, focuses on vehicular network security, communication networks between vehicles, traffic infrastructure, pedestrians, and other actors, which enable essential applications such as accident prevention, traffic orchestration, and autonomous driving. Although this is a very relevant use case for 6G networks, especially when it comes to autonomous driving, the advent of a quantum computer with sufficient processing capacity could compromise the encryption currently adopted in the protocols used by these networks. Also, this work presented ideas and opportunities to leverage research in the area, marking a first step in developing this research in partnership with SMARTNESS 2030.

Master’s student Rodrigo A. de A. Pierini and the authors Caio Teixeira, Professor Christian Esteve Rothenberg (SMARTNESS PI and Director), and Professor Marco A. Amaral Henriques, presented the article “Implementação e avaliação da cifra de fluxo Forro14 em hardware programável Tofino usando a linguagem P4” at the same event. This work is emerging thanks to Software-Defined Networking (SDN), which has enabled several innovations in computer networks, especially in the programmability of packet processing. Based on that, this work explores the feasibility and impact on computing resources of the Forro14 flow cipher algorithm on Tofino programmable switch hardware using the P4 language.

Thiago Ferreira, a student at USP, supervised by Professor Daniel Macêdo Batista, presented the article “Aplicação da Técnica Fuzzing em Testes da Implementação de Referência do SPDM” at the Workshop “Trabalhos de Iniciação Científica e de Graduação” (WTICG). This article won an honorable mention in the workshop’s work-in-progress track. The article was also co-authored by Professor Marcos Simplicio Jr. from USP, a SMARTNESS researcher.

Finally, SBSeg also honored Professor Daniel Macêdo Batista for his outstanding work as a reviewer in the symposium’s “Salão de Ferramentas”.
