We are delighted to announce that Dr. Mischa Dohler – VP Emerging Technologies at Ericsson in Silicon Valley and world-renowned expert in immersive internet, 6G and wireless communications – successfully delivered his acclaimed IEEE Distinguished Lecturer at FEEC/UNICAMP on Monday, 29 September 2025, entitled “The Dawn of an Immersive Internet: AR, AI & API on the Road to 6G”.
The talk brought together faculty, students and industry-partners to explore how immersive technologies — such as augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced APIs — will shape the transition from 5G to 6G. Dr. Dohler’s distinguished record includes being a Fellow of the IEEE and the Royal Academy of Engineering, over 300 published works, and status among the top 1 % of most-cited researchers globally.
The lecture formed part of his IEEE Distinguished Lecturer tour and marked an important milestone for the SMARTNESS Engineering Research Center (Smart Networks and Services for 2030) housed at UNICAMP: the first official visited to the newly inaugurated SMARTNESS Studio 5G, a purpose-built lab facility equipped with state-of-the-art networking and demonstration infrastructure for next-gen connectivity research.
During the tour, he observed live demonstrations of new private 5G indoor network, immersive VR/AR streaming over advanced infrastructure, and drone-network simulation platforms. Discussions were held with faculty and researchers on how the SMARTNESS Studio 5G facilities will enable end-to-end experimentation of 6G use cases — from edge-cloud interplay, network disaggregation, to real-time immersive applications.
The event underscores SMARTNESS’s ambition — together with FAPESP and Ericsson — to lead in the design and operation of future-internet services (5G/6G) with a strong Brazilian and Latin-American footprint.
We plan to build on this momentum by:
- Hosting additional distinguished lectures and industry-colloquia around the R&D interests in scope of the SMARTNESS Studio 5G.
- Showcasing student- and researcher-led demonstrations of immersive, 6G-oriented applications in the upcoming semester.
- Strengthening links with industry and start-ups to translate laboratory prototypes into real-world impact.
We congratulate all participants and thank Dr. Dohler for his visit, the SMARTNESS team for hosting, and everyone involved in making this milestone possible.
