On September 15, 2026, the SMARTNESS Research Center (Smart Networks and Services for 2030) made a prominent appearance at Campinas Innovation Week 2026. Hosted within the UNICAMP booth, the SMARTNESS team presented cutting-edge technological developments to local industry leaders, students, and innovation enthusiasts, highlighting the real-world impact of next-generation communications.
The research center was represented on-site by team members Eduardo Sartori, Alcides Tomas, Rafael Royos, and Gabriel Baltazar, who engaged directly with visitors and shared insights into the center’s ongoing projects.
Spotlighting Work Package CL3: Immersive Media
The highlight of the SMARTNESS demonstration was an interactive Virtual Reality (VR) application, developed as a core output of Work Package CL3 — Immersive Media. The demonstration illustrated how advanced 5G and emerging 6G network architectures—characterized by ultra-low latency, high throughput, and edge computing processing—enable seamless, high-definition immersive experiences without lag.
Visitors to the UNICAMP booth had the opportunity to put on VR headsets and experience the application firsthand. The demonstration drew extensive public interest and participation throughout the day, fostering continuous engagement and praise from attendees eager to explore how next-generation connectivity enhances virtual environments.
Connecting Academic Research with the Public
As an Engineering Research Center (CPE) supported by FAPESP, Ericsson, and UNICAMP alongside partner academic institutions across Brazil, SMARTNESS focuses on developing cognitive network architectures, AI-driven network management, and advanced digital services.
By presenting tangible research outcomes like the CL3 Immersive Media VR demonstration at public events like Campinas Innovation Week, SMARTNESS reinforces its core mission: bridging high-impact academic research with practical applications, talent development, and industrial innovation.
